School Supplies

School supplies are provided to the students in the classrooms by SFUSD. Your teacher may have a wishlist of supplies for the class, which will be communicated through the room parent.

What to bring on the 1st Day of TK/Kindergarten

  • Completed school health form

  • Book bag (able to fit a folder, lunchbox, water bottle, jacket)

  • Water bottle

    • *Label EVERYTHING that is brought to school (including jackets, backpack, water bottle). All unreturned lost items are put in a lost and found box in the cafeteria.

  • Complete Emergency Card form in ParentVue. Instructions here.

Transportation

By CAR:  You can drop your student off on Sargent Street without getting out of your car.  Please see this map image for more details.

By BUS:  If you are planning for your student to take the school bus, please register here by July 12.  For more Bus information, please see the SFUSD site on Transportation.

Please sign up here if you can help with morning drop off from 7:30 - 7:50 AM while your student eats breakfast in the school cafeteria!

  • There is no dress code! Any school appropriate attire is welcome.

  • Jose Ortega offers three after school programs. An on-site and active YMCA program. Mandarin immersion offerred through Little Footprints and community oriented Youth 1st. Learn more.

  • For the 2025-2026 school year, all meals will be offered at no cost for all SFUSD students, regardless of income.

    Every family must complete and turn-in the Multi-Purpose Family Income form.Please see Food and Nutrition page for more details.

    Please do not bring CANDY, COOKIES, or CHIPS, per SFUSD’s wellness policy.

    Kindergarten Tip:  Help your child practice opening food containers! Pack easy to open items you know your child can open. There are limited staff and parent volunteers to help children with lunch. We always welcome volunteer help, it’s a fun way to get to know your child’s classmates!

  • Jose Ortega Elementary offers fun events like school carnivals, STEM nights, and local parades. Families also enjoy monthly restaurant gatherings to connect outside of school. Check out the events page to learn more.
